Pros & Cons

Pros

Spyder lenscal is a great lens calibrator. It can be put on a flat surface or attached to a tripod using the built in brass threaded insert. It is a must have for any tamron g2 lens owner with the tap in console.

This datacolor is sturdy when in use, yet compact when folded for storage. It collapses into a small, flat, and easy-to-store configuration. Seems to be holding up well and it is pretty durable for my needs.

Cons

Datacolor's lens cal is a lemon. No way to insure the unit is plano-parallel to the camera sensor. The lenses a wanted to calibrate are zoom lenses. No alignment aids built in to square it to your sensor.

The build is very flimsy, the bubble level tends to stick. I am sure it works good in a pinch, but for $68 after tax, it isn't worth it.

Quality

Product works well but a little overpriced

I like the quality of the product

I also tried the 34pyramid34 and was not happy with its quality considering its cost

For your focus calibration results to be valid you need to align your camera precisely with the target when you make your tests

Price

I personally think the price is about 20 too high

I do like for what this product has to offer but i just dont think the price is quite right

It is well suited to its purpose but the price seems high for its function

Competitiveness

Unlike some of the competition this is made from a robust plastic that doesnt sag or warp

I placed mine on a kitchen table then placed my cameras on a tripod with lens at same level as center of datacolor tool

That would make it easer to ensure your af system was looking at a square boundary which is required for acurate measurements

Have not needed to use it on my lenses with my d500

But too expensive for what it is

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Just an fyi depending on the type prime or zoom and focal length of the lens the numbers are too small to see past a certain distance

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

For instance i was not able to see the numbers on the ruler clearly past about 1314 feet on a sigma 50mm 1

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Thats not the fault of this item but rather the lens however something to keep in mind as i do shoot past 14 feet with a 50mm lens and was hoping to calibrate the infinity setting on the lens at 15 feet but cant pull out the detail since the numbers are too small

It is plastic and probably could break

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Eyelashes will be more pronounced thread level detail will become more common in your shots when you use this product

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Dont just trust the manufacturer 34average34 settings to your work

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Bought a new tamron lense that appeared to be having some focus issues which ruined almost an entire vacation of pictures
