The smaller tube is great for traveling, a kid size or for people who have difficulty holding onto things. This foams in your mouth which allows it to get in all the crevices. It does not hurt after brushing or drinking hot and cold.

Maybe with a smaller tube he can manage it better and he might be mindful about using less
