Like most books like this they try to show you the techniques with pictures but they also add some text to help you understand what is going on in the picture

As a martial artist for the last ten years i found this book really nice to look through i use it more as an idea book if im looking for something to practice i can just pull open a page and do an applicationthat being said the weapon defense in this book is poor and not to be trusted i would never use any of their weapon defenses in a real situation

Overall four stars because of great hand to hand techniques which do sometimes have to be modified and poor weapon defense

However i would not recommend trying to use it as your primary resource because even though the authors have made a strong effort to include clear photos and the best possible descriptions there is still a significant opportunity for the the novice to learn techniques incorrectly so that the utility of the technique is partially or even completely degraded
