Pros & Cons
Pros
One of the most interesting & enjoyable books i've ever read. I never write book reviews, but this was such a spectacular book that i felt compelled.
Scholarly, yet written in a conversational style. The book is well researched and documented -- with index and bibliography. The footnotes are a fascinating book onto themselves.
Cons

This book is more of a travelogue on the author's journeys to locations where pigments originated.
There's a patronizing quality in finlay's distanced view of these cultures. I couldn't sign on to her idea that's it's ok - charmingly quaint, even - for afghans to suffer *.
