    This may be due to the process by which the mat is created such as these small spots not receiving a chemical wash that they were supposed to, or perhaps they were scratched in the factory or while being packaged.

    I feel that if the mat was wrapped around a cardboard tube, like wrapping paper, it would avoid this creasing effect.
