I started playing table top rpgs back in the 1980s with crappy dice rough minis and a chessex mat

Works absolutely wonderfully with crayolas washable markers i used the ultrawashable variety for extra safety

I store mine in a 4inch poster tube and it doesnt have any rolling or bumps at all when i put it out on the table

I got this chessex matt for christmas and i cannot stress enough how superior it is to the competition
