The plastic pieces account for the lower price. There is less variation in the hex pieces, as they are not separated. Board pieces are double sided so you can still have a slight variation.
Bought this game to have something new to play during the pandemic. It takes a while (? But it makes for a fabulous family game. It’s a perfect for shorter games.
Having to strategize and problem solve is key. Easy to understand instructions, well packaged, and easy to set up.

Catan is a fascinating & fun game which i'm just starting to get to grips with. If you're not quite ready to invest in the original catan this is a great introduction.

Only came with the map, cards, dice and the robber. Cannot play as is. Pretty tough to play without any resource cards.

The family edition has its own board that doesn’t work with the original catan and its extensions
The board pieces are of poor quality and smaller the hex tiles are joined in 3s

If playing with older first time players or a group where more than one player has never played it is nice but if you are not in a hurry and want the best most varied experience i would recommend normal caton so you can add expansions cities and knights etc

Yes you can flip parts around for a little change here and there but overtime it becomes too similar

The settlements cities roads and the thief are made of plastic where the traditional catan they are made of wood i believe

Pretty cheaply made though and i recommend fabricating little lids for the pieces out of styrofoam or cardboard
