This lens is probably the best buy you can make for the canon eos cameras. I'm fantastically happy with this lens, and firmly believe it'll always be a part of my camera bag as my years and experience roll on!
Camera combination is weighty but not too heavy. Love the lense, it's a bit larger than the standard package lense from canon. I use the lenses mainly for video so that's what i'm basing this review on.
Cons
Edge performance at higher apertures particularly can be mediocre in comparison to lower priced alternatives. I am prepared to believe that i was sent a faulty copy and that most copies of this lens perform perfectly.

Avoid extending the zoom in dusty places when windy or risk getting particles on the inside of the glass
Competitiveness
Having upgraded to a canon 60d body only i bought this lens primarily for the image stabilisation it works
I wouldnt place it in the heavy category but there is a definate difference between it and the kit lens of my 350d due to build quality
I took it on a 3week long holiday to south africa and despite having 3 other lenses i barely touched them

The only downside to this lens is there is no lock to stop lens creep which i am now finding very annoying

So after introducing this lens i would like to point out the pros and cons of this lenspros usm motor which allows fast focusing is great for low light shots on when you need smooth video with no shakecons focal length on a crop sensor body may be a bit to narrow for some zooming action of the lens sucks in air which can allow dust to pass through the camera body is when using video mode is very noticeable when shooting movies with audio so you will probably want to record the sound with a external microphone when using this lens

I had initially intended to buy a ef 24105 l is but was put off by the large number of people reporting faults that required out of warranty repair with canon unable or unwilling to acknowledge this

I bought one secondhand from ebay the seller included a canon hood and lens pouch so i figured he had probably taken care of it i paid about £200 as i recall

Focus lock is very quick and accurate only a couple of times photographing very similar tones in low light has the lens lens suffered but any lens in the same situation would do the same

One of the downsides ive found to the lens though is the lack of lock on the lens barrel itself
