There are so many positives and originality here, i wish the author and editor would go back to it and give it another polish. Good, bordering on great if but for the end. The final confrontation between the titans does not disappoint.
The science behind the aliens and the artifact is beyond the realm of physics as we humans know it. The protagonist alien's character develops awesomely with each page turn.

Cons
This is derivative to the nth order. In camouflage, it seems that haldeman is starting to get a bit lax.
These characters are less developed than the changeling. The only puzzle in the book is strictly for the characters to solve.

When i had only 10 pages to go i was thinking that there was no way that haldeman was going to be able to resolve everything fairly and to my satisfaction

I thought that i was either going to find out that this was to be continued although i was pretty sure that i had not seen any sequels in haldemans bibliography or else the ending was going to be lame

That being said haldeman is one of those few writers capable of saying so much with a minimum of words
