It does need an outside 9volt power source doesnt come with one but you can solder a 9volt battery clip inside and theres room for a battery inside and then it will run on a battery make sure you connect negative to the center post on the 9volt jack but most everyone has a 9volt power cord and splitter power cords so thats really not an issue
