They hang over the ears slightly but with the bulkiness and plushness of the ear pieces then it stays in place just fine

However i would note that if you have any kind of case like an otterbox on your device the plug is going to be too big to fit the jack all the way

We ended up buying 2 pairs and a splitter so we have the headphones plugged into the splitter but if we had not gotten the splitter we would have had to return the phones as they do not work with our otterbox encased ipad mini

I was most concerned about the volume being too loud but at the loudest setting its not very loud
