My house was built in '99. Rolmex 2 wire + ground was used for the 110 volt common lights and outlets. I was required to purchase this 3 wire switch for our family room recessed lighting. When they(electrical contractor) wired this set of lights they only ran one stran of Rolmex to the wall switch which was the power supply. The neutral wire was utilized in the attic to complete the circuit. This was an acceptable practice for light switchs and apparently was allowed in the local electrical wiring code when the home was built. Not sure if allowed in today's code but should be for new construction with the evolution of smart home switch devices. Currently the only companies that I could find that offer a NEUTRAL WIRE NOT REQUIRED smart light switch is GE and Leviton brand as the Leviton brand requires an added expense of a required hub. I recently replaced the incandescent can lights with LED dimmable lighting kits. I did have to utilize the screwed socket adaptor to finish setting up in the C by GE app. When you have a set of lights on the same circuit it doesn't matter which light you select to install the screw in adaptor. I was able to bridge the lights to the Alexia app. All features of this switch works as designed and described. The only thing that's not mentioned in the product description is the possibility of requiring the use of the supplied adapter.One final comment... BEFORE you purchase a smart switch identify the wiring in the electrical switch box to see if you have a neutral wire available to determine if you need to buy a three or four wire smart switch.  Read Less
