The bottom of the stand is a u shape that cups the bottom of the phone while it rests on the stand

That being said it is not abrasive to the phone finish and also will not damage your desk

Yes the hinge is plastic but mine shipped just fine maybe the packaging was bad for others

It takes up almost no space yet allows me to see if i get any new texts weather alerts push notifications etc on my phone while its on silent mode without having to to touch it
