The donutshaped ring is the part that lights up the black center is what detects motion

I toned down the bright light by wrapping it with foil since i only want to prevent a stubbed toe in the dark but you do have to keep the center uncovered to sense motion

The one thing i didnt like is that the motion sensor is directly in the center of the light itself so you have to have the lamp pointed directly at the area you expect to see motion

You cant point the light up at the ceiling for example to diffuse it in a dark room because then it wont see the motion

You end up with the light pointed directly into your face in order for it to work properly
