Maria dahvana headley's translation and reinterpretation of 'beowulf' is brilliant. It captures the drinking and laddish culture that must surely have pervaded halls like heorot, capturing viking-age braggadocio and portraying it with an earthy glee.

In her research for that novel she read many translations and friends encouraged her to work on her own

Ive read seven or eight translations of beowulf from the seamus heaney and tolkien versions to one thrown together by a friend and colleague at university as well as seen almost every version of it committed to film up to and including the extremely weird scifi version starring christopher lambert from the late nineties
