It is an absolutely brilliant design which relies only on municipal water pressure to turn the pump on and off via a float and create suction to remove the water from the sump

The problem with batteries is that they have a limited amount of storage typically 412 hours so if you experience an extended outage during a severe rain event like a hurricane it is very likely that the batteries will be dead before your power is restored which means there will be water damage

Finally a generator only provides a backup to the electric supply it does not offer protection in the event of a pump failure

Outages to municipal water systems do not generally affect large numbers of customers like power outages do and are very infrequent

After almost a year in service it has saved our basement from water damage on at least two occasions once during a storm where we were without power for 4 days and once when i accidentally left the electric sump pump unplugged
