Nearest repeater on the 2 meter band is 9 miles. They work great and are a good starter radio. Works great, sounds good, plenty loud.
No complaints. Can't ask for more for twice the money imo.
Cons
I'm disappointed as the reviews are so strong for this radio. The charger was not included, new charger is $15 which has now made this a bad purchase. Terrible experience. Ridiculous customer service.

Overall the baofeng uv5r is a killer deal for the price

Get a list of repeater frequencies and setup instructions usually available from chirp or from a member of your ham club to help you set up the radio for best use

They are not the equal of an expensive radio but you should not expect an inexpensive radio to equal a 2 to 400
