The uv bulb is shielded by black plastic however it does not reach to the very bottom of the filter

Also there is uv light leaking quite brightly from the bottom of the filter

I ended up getting a separate uv unit for my canister filter so am just keeping this as a backup unit in case the canister should fail

All in all if you are on a budget and have room for this big unit in the back of your aquarium this would be a decent choice for a tank say no larger than 30 gallons

However i will be adding friendly bacteria on a regular basis because i am not sure if they are all being killed along with the bad ones

Only ding i have is for the vendor the unit i received didnt include the ceramic rings media and the parts appeared used where i thought i was getting a new item
