Pros & Cons
Pros
Anna karenina is about a woman who has an affair with count vronsky. Anna's story is about hypocrisy, selfishness, seduction and the outcome--two people, one of them a cad.
Tolstoy jumps from character to character.
The writing is phenomenal! And it's not bad! It’s that kind of book. I have been truly impressed.
Reading it was an experience of lightness and joy. The book is wonderfully complex with so many interesting threads running through it. Enjoyed the journey and never had read 832 pages before.
The kindle edition eliminates a big problem -- the names. Richard pevear and larissa volokhonsy are known to be the best russian translators of our time.
Cons
This is one of the worst books i've ever read. Way too flowery and full of extraneous details. Citizen kane is not the best movie of all time either.
Highlights
Quality
A classic i had read before but not with the admiration of tolstoys exquisite characterization and attention to detail
There are even some like levin who sympathize with the peasants
Rereading for the first time since high school
