They were once made of uniformly heavy canvas that had been treated with tar to make it water resistant hence the tar part whereas tarps of today are just as likely to be made from vinyl or woven polyethylene with a new name of polytarp

They should have reinforced grommets on the sides and corners to attach rope or pegs

Needed a replacement tarp for one that lasted a mere three months before the grommets eyelets tore to be fair it was a cheap tarp and the winds were very blustery
