I used electrical tape bindings to keep them separated but the kit should include covers so the contacts are not exposed to the elements

After you remove the old pump be sure to check for any debris in the inlet portion of the pump that will have a screen on it

If you find any debris in the old pump that may be why your old pump failed but usually they fail from normal wear
