I am using a late 2015 macbook pro and do find it is hit or miss sometimes and had to download display menu to get it to work like others have said

I had to change my resolution apply and put it back on 4k to make it recognize 60hz

Was shocked to find it working although i spent 20 minutes in the settings trying to figure out why it said 4k but the screen looked like 1600x900 but finally i noticed the setting for zoom was moved to 300 not sure how or why and once i moved it back to 100 it looked fine

I am able to access the retina monitor settings running os x el capitan without any issues or third party software needed
