His characters feel like real people, people you can empathize with. His depictions of the terrain, weather, and so on are achingly memorable. Loved the closing bit--showed a compassionate side to leaphorn.
Highly recommended. Will definitely read more with time. All is good, thank you.
Detective leaphorn is on terminal leave, intending to retire following his wife emma's death in surgery. Jim gets a simple punishment assignment to prevent theft on the reservation. That theft turns out to be intertwined with joe's missing person.

But if not what you need to know is that all of his stories are set in and around the navajo reservation in the 4 corners area of the southwest the protagonists are navajo tribal police who have to reconcile the modern day law with the traditional native culture
