    You cant help but marvel at the massive changes in fortune from one emperor to the next and the reading the book is something like watching a train wreck in slow motion as the muslims continually siege the eastern empire

    Norwich is very clear on where he stands in regards to the byzantine empire proclaiming in his introduction that had it not been for the eastern empire the supposedly advanced west would have been overrun by peoples from the middle and far easts more completely than it ever was
