He can then just turn on his speakers if he wants to use them or just wear either the ear buds or the headphones and he’s not trying to keep track of which cable is which

It might work in the sense that it will pass some of the audio from each to the headphones but youre basically having two or more outputs drive each other possibly causing damage to the output circuitry and the sound quality will be terrible
