These are very cheap and are not very weatherproof. Water collects inside the housing through each closed seam and the cord exit holes. This defeats the purpose for having them.

I tied the two ends together before plugging them into each other

Where it saves money is in cracked cords which always happens eventually from knotting two cord ends together
