I nailed them in roughly one foot apart at the base and sprayed the edges of the bark where new growth and leaves emerge from with herbicide

On “denser” or “wet” trees if the drill has issues drilling use a bigger drill

Unless you need to be reminded of your work i placed them in to almost the head cut it off the head and then used a countersink or trim nail setter to set the nail as deep and completely as possible
