It has no battery back-up, but it has a capacitor to store power if/when the electricity goes out. There are two brightness one is 100% full, and one is adjustable from 0% to 100% with a dial on the bottom. The brightness is adjustable for sleeping.

Control * are super easy to use, never had to crack open the manuel. Easy to configure (including setting time & brightness) 2 alarms are pluses. Adjustable brightness and features.
The radio has great sound for a little radio. And the reception is good. It has 6 different alarms to choose from - i am using piano music right now but will try tweeting birds next. Sound quality is good for such a tiny speaker.
Every couple weeks i have to reset the time on this clock because it keeps gaining minutes. It reset totally when i clicked timeset/sleep split second. The digital display is already burned out. Takes 6 hours to charge fully.
Even with antennae, very very poor reception. Not even possible to manually tune to a particular station. Reception for many stations is just static no sound or music.
