In defense of adler and van doren, it is apparent many reviewers often make two mistakes in their critiques. A good and fair reading means fully understanding the author on their terms, then criticizing.
The book is horrendously long for the meager amount of advice it provides. The authors expalain how a book is structured and how it was written, but they don't give you much hints, which would help you. This book is also redundant and repetitive.
It seems to me this is a case of not enough updating from original publishing to current times. The return window is past which is unfortunate. This is the only revised edition, therefore, not sending it back to store.
