There are two extra queens of each color to help you deal with pawns that have evolved. The magnets are strong enough to hold the pieces in place during play.
The board is actual wood - i think a thin laminate, but still better than plastic. Each piece has a place in the foam insert to keep them from rattling around.
The checkers pieces don't fit well inside and can cause a bump when using the board. Very cheaply made and glued together for the price.
It's easy to assemble. The hippos can detach from the board for easier storage. Everything, including the marbles, fits underneath the game board.
My family loves the game. The hippos and the game board feel much cheaper than the version i remember as a kid, so i hope it holds up to extended use. Classic game for kids.
This new version has been manufactured to a much cheaper build quality. It's total garbage. The constant repairs that are necessary during game play makes it much less appealing to adults, too.
The plastic is so thin and soft that it gets distorted after a few cycles. This causes the hippos to catch on it instead of sliding pass it. The mechanism gets jammed.
The plastic hippos come attached all of the time. They are also made with much cheaper, soft, bendable plastic. Very cheaply made. It’s like they were trying to make it super safe for kids but did a * cheap job.
The game board is no longer one piece with the hippos attached. The quality feels shoddy and wobbly. Pass on this piece of junk and try to find an older board at a thrift shop.
