Human anatomy is succinctly explained & demonstrated. By simplifying the human form into essential shapes, it helps you bring forth the image in your mind's eye. This, by example, allows you a kind of blueprint to a more detailed finish.
I'm not sure if it's purposeful or not, but it does make it easier to use for referencing because it lays mostly flat. It packs a lot of information into a small, convenient form factor.
