revieweridC26A13BBEB6C6403C587FE5D77960F18reviewernameAmstravelerreviewtextTo be honest I don’t go to enough Michelin star restaurants to be able to differentiate between them adequately But a meal at Au Crocodile will not disappoint nnFirst impressions The visuals are really superb when you enter the restaurant Fine modern French decor flowers a few oversized mirrors paintings great carpet plenty of space per table smartly attired waiters in black apart from maître d’ Indirect lighting When they actually get to serving it gets even better The friendly attentive service is almost balletic as perfect dish placement is synchronised for two diners synchronised for pairs of diners if you’re in a group of four or six – there weren’t any threes or fives around for us to see how those would have been handled Plate presentation carefully thought out in advance Gloved hand to position cutlery nnThere’s gentle background music which changed from bland piano renditions of midbrow classical to soft jazz somewhere around 2230 Not quite our taste but a very acceptable compromise clearly a lot of thought had gone into how to handle the question of what sound and what volume to put out into the room nnBut what we really came for is the food The six course tasting menu was delicious throughout – if we had to choose favourites then our two would be the lobster and the pikeperch in a sauerkraut sauce Classic French with a modern touch is how they promote what they do no molecular cuisine here but superb ingredients concentrated flavours and craftsmanship If you like cheese include the cheeseboard with any number of other courses … faultlessnnPortions moderate – you don’t have to be very very hungry to enjoy the six dishes but you will have eaten enough nnMatching wines were all delicious But surprisingly young – nothing wrong with a 2017 PouillyVinzelles the excellent vintage more than makes up for its youth but the Crozes Hermitages the only red offered could have been a little more mature We asked for one flight to be in half glasses rather than full glasses – occasionally the sommelier forgot so we got more than 50 of the volume for half the price …… no complaints We didnt look at the wine list nnPacing was good and unhurried – we had three and a half hours to enjoy our six courses plus five or six amuses thrown in before and during the food and with the coffee tables on fewer courses arrived after us and finished much sooner n nYou don’t come here to worry about money – just accept it will be expensive and that sparkling water is €9 a bottle Our bill for two six course tasting menus and four and four half glasses of matching wines – plus a minimum of extras – was just short of €400 Is there anything wrong with a restaurant requiring an up front commitment meaning you pay if you don’t show Well airlines theatres and hotels have been doing it for years so I don’t see why restaurants should be asked to be an exception Especially if cancellation is free up to 24 hours in advance Otherwise those who do turn up pay for the no shows – no thank youreviewrating50sentimentclasspositivesentimentresult08172638742307693sentimentbreakdownTo be honest I
