Initially we were interested in Acadia National Park and hiking Katahdin in Baxter State Park. However, although we found Acadia beautiful and the hiking modestly difficult, it was completely overrun by tourists fresh off the cruise ships, as was Bar Harbor. The only way there is on Route 1, which is a highly trafficked and slow potholed mess. We realized getting to Baxter also would take a long time on back roads, so we changed our plans and decided to hike Camden Hills. We were in for a total surprise: the hike was both difficult and rewarding, with amazing views overlooking Camden and Penobscot Bay. Our hike climbed over 2100 feet in 8 miles of roots and rocks and mud. We are experienced and well conditioned hikers and we were both tired when we completed our circuit. On most of the trails there were few, if any, fellow hikers. I’d recommend this park and its climbs of Mt. Battie and Mt. Megunticook to anyone looking for a quiet getaway, rugged hiking and amazing views.
