The elephants seemed contented and we went on a little trek with them watching them hoover up the forest floor greenery. The guides didn’t hit or even push or manhandle the animals in any way, they simply called to them like you would to your dog when you’re taking it for a walk. We went at the elephants pace and none of them did anything they didn’t want to. \nWe were given little bags of food to feed the elephants and it was so cute the way they snuffled the bamboo sticks right out of your hands!\nWe then had a lunch which was chicken vegetables and rice. It was basic but plenty to eat for a little vegan like me. The sanctuary also provided free coffee on arrival and free bottled water throughout the day. \nWe then went to the “spa” where we got to wash the elephants with water and mud. Now this was seriously disgusting and also amazing in equal measure. Here you could see how the elephants were just being themselves and not controlled by the guides at all. They were crashing down into the water all around us and having a ball it was great! (though make sure you keep your wits about you unless you want a tusk through your tibia!) \nOn the way out we visited a beautiful waterfall to clean off and were given a free little elephant key ring keepsake which was really lovely. \nAll photos taken by the sanctuary were made available the same day on Dropbox free of charge also so this felt like really good value as tourist attractions usually ask like 200-300 baht for that sort of thing \n\nAll in all an amazing experience. Would highly recommend and good value for money considering everything you get!!","review_rating":5.0,"sentiment_class":"positive","sentiment_result":0.8475716052631579,"sentiment_breakdown":[["We were picked up from our hostel and driven about 1.",["positive",0.79641753]],["5 h from Chiang Mai to Hug Elephant Sanctuary.",["positive",0.87485796]],["On arrival the guide told us about the elephants and how the sanctuary works to look after them without the tourism they used to get from elephant riding.",["unknown",0.77344936]],["I see some reviews here saying the elephants were mistreated but I did not see any evidence of this.",["unknown",0.7052999]],["The elephants seemed contented and we went on a little trek with them watching them hoover up the forest floor greenery.",["positive",0.9299205]],["The guides didn’t hit or even push or manhandle the animals in any way, they simply called to them like you would to your dog when you’re taking it for a walk.",["unknown",0.7895982]],["We went at the elephants pace and none of them did anything they didn’t want to.",["unknown",0.677681]],["We were given little bags of food to feed the elephants and it was so cute the way they snuffled the bamboo sticks right out of your hands!",["positive",0.9013067]],["We then had a lunch which was chicken vegetables and rice.",["positive",0.93928385]],["It was basic but plenty to eat for a little vegan like me.",["positive",0.9809982]],["The sanctuary also provided free coffee on arrival and free bottled water throughout the day.",["positive",0.9837173]],["We then went to the “spa” where we got to wash the elephants with water and mud.",["positive",0.8385494]],["Now this was seriously disgusting and also amazing in equal measure.",["positive",0.9588258]],["Here you could see how the elephants were just being themselves and not controlled by the guides at all.",["unknown",0.39426404]],["They were crashing down into the water all around us and having a ball it was great!",["positive",0.8941775]],["(though make sure you keep your wits about you unless you want a tusk through your tibia!",["positive",0.82314223]],[") On the way out we visited a beautiful waterfall to clean off and were given a free little elephant key ring keepsake which was really lovely.",["positive",0.87828517]],["All photos taken by the sanctuary were made available the same day on Dropbox free of charge also so this felt like really good value as tourist attractions usually ask like 200-300 baht for that sort of thing All in all an amazing experience.",["positive",0.97049046]],["Would highly recommend and good value for money considering everything you get!",["positive",0.9935954]]],"reviewer_fake_points":0}

Hug elephant sanctuary seemed like they did a nice job. Although there are a few compromises that was taken, these Elephants came from massive tourism and was taken to lesser (evil) tourism. To be honest, I didn’t see anybody use force to make them interact with us, instead, they kinda talked to them in a commanding tone which the elephants follow. But at the end of the tour, I saw one of the Elephants with its foot tied to a tree with a rope. They treat the elephants well and provide an incredible experience for the price. After bathing with the elephants we also hiked to the nearby waterfall. Highly recommend! We where given a up close and personal experience with 4 lovely elephants. Oreo the keep was so friendly and answered any questions. He took time with each visitor, taking pictures and chatting. The elephants seemed to enjoy them selfs, one went off to eat when it was mud bathe time and the keepers allowed it. Another didnt want to get out the water and it was allowed to play till it got out its self. I saw no use of hooks or riding just great fun. Defo recommend this trip.
