There are no happily tied up endings – indeed there are no endings to speak of in any of the stories as each leaves off in the middle of life – sometimes maddeningly in the middle of a problem making it clear that a nicely tied up solution is impossible

With the exception of a protagonist who is filipino the female characters often seemed rather aloof passionate but also disconnected from the consequences of their actions – almost in the tradition of stereotypical masculine characters
