At the time i thought that the rubber had just split and broken off

The tyre was still inflated and i thought nothing of it

After removing the tyre i examined the original plug

It was whole but there were no signs of the glue having attached to it properly so the plug would have been free fitting

Unfortunately the nail had gone all the way through and the tyre went down when it was removed

It was just off centre of the tread so nowhere near the edge only a small hole was visible when the nail was removed
