Pros

Looking for goshawks is like looking for it comes, but not often, and you don’t get to say when or how. Macdonald also delves into his life and how his experiences and angst influenced his training and relationship with his goshawk.

It is a testament to the healing power of nature and the enduring bonds we form with animals. It explores why people seek refuge from loss by delving into the wild. Sometimes a reckoning comes of all of the lives we have lost.

H is for hawk is a book about falconry and an ode to hawks, in particular. Helen macdonald’s journey through grief and the joy falconer brought her. Macdonald's book will resonate with anyone who has experienced loss or struggled to find solace.

She “you can put your hand out to where things were and feel that tense, shining dullness of the space where the memories are. It happens to everyone. But you feel it alone. The cure for loneliness is solitude.

Cons

The only salvaging parts of the book are the main character's actual falconry time, training and bonding with her hawk. It tries, but fails miserably. There are so many passages about taking mabel out to fly and hunt that feel utterly repetitive.

H is for hawk left me feeling pretty cold. Author excuses * and child *. Author gets mired in odd personal/psychological stuff and strings out the book forever.
