Epiphone viola is a violin shaped bass. The epi wins hands down in quality of craftsmanship.
Viola bass is more sensitive to the amp quality than american made fenders. A mia fender, to my ears, will hold its own even with a cheaper amp.

It has heaps of punch and a nice action and its seriously well made with simple but adequate controls and decent machine heads
The beatles gear book describes these basses as fragile and not holding up well
The sound is classic plodding and full

It is a beautiful bass guitar and sells for around 800
With the money you save buy a beatle wig a nehru jacket take some lucy in the sky with diamonds and play along
30 cheaper free shipping and no sales tax
So they are very poor value if you want a working instrument rather than a collector item

Well regardless of the country of origin the hofner i tried was very obviously inferior to the epi
I compared this to the matching hoffner based on price and the epiphone sounds better stays in tune and is of a much higher quality
