A little on the flimsy side but that is normal for this type of product and really doesnt matter as once installed there isnt anything to disturb the plates

The air going up the tubes draws water through the gravel

Without an item such as this the gravel cannot act as a filter as there is no water flow

For optimal filtering the gravel layer should be at least three inches thick
