Pros & Cons
Pros
Ordered this under my wifes acct. Love it. Wish i could send my old one, so someone could refurbish it.
User mode allows creation of just about any drum beat / pattern you can think of using the samples from the included drum kits. Needless to say, this is so much better than manually compiling song steps. It is fairly simple to operate.
The alesis does the job well for my demo recordings. I use a digital multi-track so this fits my needs. Electrical tape covering a busted out corner for the last 4 years and all.
The launchpad is my master midi clock in addition to sending note data, so my sr-16 is just playing drum hits as a * unit. This model (sr-18) is worth every penny.
Cons
Be forewarned. This is very uncool. Word of mouth is the best, or the worst kind of advertisement.
Unfortunately, the new one has the same midi out problems. Upon connecting the cables to an amp, no sound was produced. Can't change the lenghth of patterns and copying one sub-pattern to another pattern.
Highlights
Quality
It feels fairly sturdy and is heavy enough to the point where it never slides around with heavy cables pulling on it which is nice
Midi inoutthruthe build is solid the drum samples are top quality
A and b fills24bit sound engine upgraded from the original 16 bit makes the noise floor on this incredibly low non existent
They are like old rubber calculators buttons and not like the stiff crisp drum pads we’re used to nowadays
Price
Being able to create my own drum sets and tracks for the price

The sr18 sounds are wonderfully editable with pitch adjustment up and down an octave lowpass nonresonant filtering and probably most importantly decay editing

The onboard sequencer is easy to use but a little tiresome

If you wanted to gig with it you could program in the daw and then record unquantized straight in to keep your original computer programmed feel

The only real downside to this unit and it’s somewhat irksome is that the sample library isn’t organized super intuitively

Alike samples aren’t always grouped together so if you’re looking for which clap to use for instance you can’t just browse all the options in series

The sr18 does so much to enhance the sr16 that i really hope we get a similar unexpected leap to what alesis does in its hopeful next upgrade
