    Got them for my sister and she hasn't used them yet so i don't know how well they work, but the glass was reasonably thick so they seem durable and the openings did not appear occluded.

    Dirt getting in stem does not matter as the water still drains through the dirt when the plant needs water.

    We don't pre-drill a hole but just sort of gently maneuver/wiggle them into place.
