The smaller part where the buckle is allows a smaller buckle therefore when the dog lays down he will be more comfortable the larger part makes the collar rest where it supposed to on his neck as well as offer more visibility which is why most people buy a collar like this in the first place

Not a lot of room for adjustment as the small section containing the looped material for adjustment is not the full collar as for most collarsis it merely the small thinner sectionso measure very carefully and be aware the range in fitting is narrow and not forgiving
