Pros

If you are a serious japanese student looking to become fluent, then tobira is a good point of departure. I highly recommend this book for any intermediate learner! After looking over the textbook, it is primarily in japanese, which is good.

Tobira touts its multimedia element. The text shoves lots of vocabulary and grammar patterns in each chapter. Having politeness levels on the dialogues is really helpful.

Tobira covers 503 new kanji (based on jlpt level 2 kanji) with 35 new ones introduced in each chapter. This number is subdivided into kanji that a student must learn to read and write (rw kanji) and those that one need only know how to read. There is ...  Read More

Tobira is great for learning if you want to challenge yourself or completely immerse yourself in the language. It's a large enough challenge that there is a lot to learn and i feel more accomplished since i was stuck at a wall on how i should learn ne...  Read More

Genki books are pretty good for beginners. This textbook is incredibly dense, especially as a third-year student coming off of genki. This is an intermediate/advanced level textbook that expects you to be able to read, write, and understand japanese a...  Read More

Cons

The kanji type is too small. The fact that the kanji is super small is frustrating and aggravating.

It is hard to use at first because of all the kanji

If it is a kanji learned in the text or beginner texts like the genkii series there will be no small furigana

I would say that these articles are akin to brochuretype articles designed by travel agencies or culture centers looking to promote japan to foreigners

In any case i didnt find myself lulled to sleep

Beginners may find it jarring that the textbook makes no effort to formally teach kanji so know that you will have to develop your own kanji learning method at this level a kanji dictionary should always be nearby

Mind you you will still be a far cry from the vernacular of japanese youths but at least you have a few informal options

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Multimedia tobira sells itself as a multimedia textbook and mostly lives up to this claim

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

After completing tobira i would reckon that a student should be able to comfortably read everyday articles with dictionary aid of course of varying difficulty
