It works without the battery cause of the windup dynamo inside and the rechargeable solar panel on top

If solar time of 6 hours is not long enough you can crank charge them for additional battery free hours

Others have complained about the poor quality but remember 20 of all products are defective when initially purchased so its a crap shoot if you get the one thats broken mine is working great
