I think the only part i found slow was at the very beginning, and that's not really a fault of the writing/plot - i understand completely why davin did it, as it sets up a few key relationships - as much as it's my personal preference, as i tend not to enjoy prose with a child narrator.

The characters were well-developed, and it felt like i was reading a lost tamora pierce novel from her secret sci-fi days, but the only sci-fi element is the world itself, which underpins everything but never makes the reader uneasy, because it never makes the characters uneasy.

The narrators are nuanced and compelling, and seeing queer representation in a way that didn’t center on the characters’ hardships as queer women was so refreshing.

I received felicia davin’s thornfruit (hardcopy) only yesterday and couldn’t put it down.

The queer representation is wonderful, varied and honest, and the characters are deep and flawed and true.
