Despite all of his merits, landes presented several of his chapters, especially the ones on china and japan in a very very biased fashion.

Although his mockery of the celestial empire during the late qing is highly accurate, his overall tone makes the entire history of china seem worthless.

To everybody who have learned about east asian history, japan was a perpetual vassal who proclaimed its inferiority to han and tang china for thousands of years.

However, the notion landes mentioned of japan being the best colonial master of all time is just ridiculously stupid and untrue.

The oppression japan imposed on these two regions through mass brainwashing and outright exploitation is impossible for modern audiences to even conceive.

Additionally, the reason these two regions developed their economies so quickly was due to the hard-working nature of its people, not to japan's so-called economic policies which probably resulted in more destruction than construction.

Of course, i still believe this to be an amazing and well-crafted book, despite certain areas that seem very very biased to certain proposterous beliefs.

While this was not a difficult read, it was not a really engaging read either, it is simply loaded with just too much information to be a real page-turner.
