A solid foundational tome and good reference. Author explains a lot of why's and his history lessons just capture the essence without boring frills.
The information is easily accessible, informative and comprehensive. Key concepts are highlighted and set apart from the general text. This allows the newbies to concentrate on the earlier chapters for each topic.
The tcp/ip guide is a huge reference book (1616 pages). The discussion of tcp windowing in chapters 46 and 49 is also great, and all four of the pages that make up chapter 86 on gopher are simply a delight to read. It is much more comprehensive than o... Read More
It weighs more than my laptop and you will tire of schlepping it around. I am in it (dev/sys eng) and i like the low-level details of how stuff works.
It includes an overview and comparison of tcp and udp and discusses establishing connections, management and termination of tcp.

Only thing is though the fundamentals are there this is a book published in 2005 which is pretty ancient by tech standards
