The characters are well drawn and most of them likeable. Snout, the gypsy boy, ranks up there with my all time favorite characters as a gifted scholar unaccepted by the intellectual elites.

Unmarried beatrice faces challenges in every direction, first with a rigid landlady. Agatha takes on both negative as well as positive characteristics and so becomes a more fleshed-out character (no pun intended) bates, and susan howatch.
