Pros & Cons
Pros
I completely applaud morgan for creating a lasting (and compelling) work of fiction which will affirm gay readers of fantasy. Ringil is pretty interesting and compelling a character as created by morgan. Morgan is brilliant. His characterization, incr... Read More
Intelligent, wry and bold, this is a great piece of writing. It is fantastically dark, and grimly realistic. The writing is excellent when you are just considering the actual words and not judging for the subjects.
Supernatural - almost godlike - beings are suspected as returning after an absence of thousands of years. Egar dragonbane is a barbarian hero in the conan mold who finds exposure to civilization makes him ill-suited to return to his people. Ringil the... Read More
Is relevant when being gay is life-threating (which it borderline is in the novel) the main character is a complicated nuanced character. He's a delightfully anti-patriotic character as he comes to hate what his country has done to its citizens. It's ... Read More
Cons
The book seems to be a pretense for forcing readers of basic fantasy to digest *-erotica as a statement, not in pursuit of a larger plot point. What really ruins this book is the repeated emphasis on the protagonist being homosexual.
The story drags on with only one or two chapters so far. The dialog goes on forever while the plot moves at a snail's pace. Brought the whole, slow-enough-as-it-is plot to a grinding halt.
The steel remains is a mediocre effort. Morgan's unlikable characters make the book worse. The book is a far cry from the takashi kovacs stories or market forces.
Part of this is just the tropes being a bit heavy handed. It's really kind of comical. It all comes off as clumsy and overwrought.
Highlights
Quality
34 indeed a big appeal of the book is how it displays individual people being washed along with the tide of history
This is the first of a trilogy with the last due out in october 2014
At first i was immediately put off with the slow build and constant bad language
With the added sex and language i felt it was all just gratuitous
Shipping
Wowthis was a fast read full of interesting characters a gay hero
Glory comes from within not how fast the sword can be swung
Packaging/appearance
Explanations are hinted at but left to the readers ingenuity to fill in the blanks
Competitiveness
Both thumbsup and 5 stars upon 5 from me
