Part theology, part history, part love story, part satire … certainly its primary audience will be those interested in theology and historical fiction though perhaps less appealing to those who have no trunk with their weekly dose of received dogma
The plot is set in the early fourth century, charting the metamorphosis of sophia, at times called hypatia, as she is helped by timaeus to escape her brothel existence
Helton’s new book, the secular gospel of sophia, is a work of fiction which takes the reader to a time within which they have not existed, and to places where they have probably not lived
However, in following the actions of the principal characters, and the circumstances of which they were a part, the reader finds him- or herself looking back to a time during which the foundation of western culture was being laid
