Pros

It reveals the truth behind some of the most legendary names in pirate history. It also describes the fascinatingly bizarre elements of ship maintenance not normally discussed in any glib fictional account.

This is a well-produced, well-narrated audiobook. I heartily recommend to anyone who is fascinated by the topic. Thr book describes their politics and life.

This is history at its most raw and bare. The author often provides the romanticized folk story first, then immediately corrects the historical inaccuracies. A welcome change from authors shoehorning their own guesses into their timelines.

The writing is terrific and there's about a handful of illustrations for good reference. Great read.

There were some definite leaders in the republic. Samuel bellamy, charles vane, and edward "black beard" thatch. Woodard’s narrative provides lush sensory details that are often glossed over in visual art.

    I would say that anyone buying books about actual historical piracy knows the brutality of what theyre in for but in case they are just stepping into historical texts i would warn them about the intense descriptions of violence in the story
